A Message from the Composer

CONNECTion is work for vibraphone and fixed backing track that explores the way that humans connect with each other in today’s world. We live in a time where we can meet and talk with anyone, anywhere in the world. We can instantly share our ideas, thoughts, opinions, and actions for millions to see. The world has never been more accessible and connected than we are right now. Yet, depression, anxiety, and loneliness are all on the rise. Devices that were intended to help us engage with one another distract us from the world that is directly around us. There is a love-hate relationship with these tools because without them, we would not have the same opportunities, jobs, or people in our lives. Still, their addictive abilities rob us of what little time we have on this planet. This piece serves not to make a big political statement on technology, but to acknowledge our relationship with these things and consider how it is shaping the way we engage with people in our daily lives. It seems to me like everyone is looking for the same thing. CONNECTion.
