A Message from the Composer
Copper Chambers is a work that is intended to truly show off the virtuosity of a timpanist in a modern percussion ensemble setting. This work explores the extreme musical range of the timpani and uses a percussion ensemble to accentuate the experience, bringing out new timbres and melodic ideas. It includes extreme dynamics in both directions, many advanced techniques, and requires a well-trained ear for tuning. The title pulls from how timpani are made and evokes imagery of a metallic chamber where sound is crafted. This piece explores different qualities of the instrument through moments of intense, percussive energy and deep, introspective musicality. The work is ultimately a showcase of the timpani and explores this instrument in a new soloistic context. As you experience this work, listen to the instrument in a way you may not have experienced. Listen for the Copper Chambers.
