A Message from the Composer

The Grandfather Clock was inspired by the KSU percussion studio room. If you are ever in that room and it is dead silent, the only sound you will hear is the clicking of our wall clock at 60 bpm. I would use this often to find tempo when playing marches in my lesson or to just cool down and feel time. I loved the idea of everything crazy happening around it, but that clock was always steady. I took this idea and combined it with the famous timpani composition style of Elliot Carter. I came up with that beginning ostinato and found fun, metric ways to dance around that steady tempo. No matter how chaotic things get, The Grandfather Clock is always ticking away.
